To evaluate the effect of local delivery of lipoic acid (LA) and 4-hydroxy-2,5,6-triaminopyrimidine sulfate (HTAP) by polymeric microspheres in the bilateral cavernous nerve injury (BCNI) in the rat. LA is an antioxidant previously shown to improve neurogenic and endothelial cell dysfunction in the corpus cavernosa of diabetic rats through reduction of reactive oxygen species. HTAP is a novel, not yet extensively studied, multifunctional antioxidant with the potential to moderate peripheral nerve damage by similar mechanisms.
