High heart rate (HR) is an independent risk factor for erectile dysfunction (ED) The I(f) (Ifunny) or hyperpolarization-activated cyclic nucleotide-gated (HCN) channels are involved in synaptic transmission and neuronal excitability under physiological conditions. The I(f) channel inhibitor ivabradine controls HR in the sinoatrial node and reduces myocardial oxygen demand without inducing hypotension. Only one study has explored HR reduction with ivabradine-improved ED parallel to decreased oxidative stress and penile fibrosis in atherosclerotic plaque load in ApoE-knockout mice.
